History The J. H. Jones was a Lake Huron, Georgian Bay coastal steamer. It was built in Goderich, ON in 1888 for James Clark & Co. It was acquired by the Crawford Tug Co. in 1903 and captained by James Crawford. It sank November 22,1906 off Cape Croker in a heavy storm with the loss of twelve crew and fourteen passengers. It was found in 2018 by Jerry Eliason, Cris Kohl, Bob Crawford, and Ken Merryman. Bob Crawford is the great grandson of the Captain James Crawford the Captain of the Jones at the time of sinking.
Disposition Foundered in a storm off Cape Croker, lost with all hands in 1906.

Site Description: The wreck lies in 165 ft of water off Cape Croker, ON. The hull is intact but upper cabin structure is gone. Cabin wreckage is scattered around the hull mostly on the port side. No sign of a wheel, telegraph, compass or other marine artifacts. The whistle is still on the stack. The builder’s plate is on the engine John Doty Engine Co. The propeller is buried up to the hub.
