Site Description The hull of the Erie L. Hackley is relatively intact except for the stern which was damaged in a botched salvage attempt. The forward half of the bulwark is intact. The cabins are gone exposing the ship’s machinery which includes a firebox boiler and single expansion engine which was configured as a HPNC (High Pressure Non Condensing) engine which means it had no condenser or air pump but vented exhaust steam to the atmosphere. A heavily encrusted dual piston bilge pump sits on the starboard side of the engine and boiler. Much of the rest of the machinery has apparently been salvaged. There are no anchors or windlass extant on the site.
